Review

Well-organized, accessible, up-to-date, and informative, this handbook
should be on the bedside table of every insomniac (although it is
written with women in mind). Sleep apnea, hormonal changes, pregnancy,
stress, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, restless leg
syndrome, the birth of a baby, a snoring bed partner—these are just a
few of the many physical, psychological, and social causes of insomnia
covered in this comprehensive guide.

Each sleep disorder has a clearly written description and
easy-to-follow recommendations for treatment. The disorders are also
discussed from the point of view of their effect on the partner and/or
family of the affected individual, a useful perspective often not
considered sufficiently. Information is given on the characteristics and
functions of normal sleep, and the consequences of its disruption. An
extensive list of resources includes sleep clinics, Internet sites, a
copy of the National Sleep Foundation Sleep Diary, and even the caffeine
content of common foods and beverages. The comprehensive index enables
readers to locate any topic of relevance easily.

This book can be recommended as providing current, research-based
information on insomnia and its causes and cures, in an easy-to-use,
reader-friendly format.
