Suzette Mayr is the author of the critically acclaimed novels Moon Honey
and The Widows. Her poems and short fiction have appeared in numerous
periodicals and anthologies.
The characters in Venous Hum live in a nameless Alberta city, an
amalgam of Edmonton and Calgary situated in a slightly alternate Canada
where gay marriage was legalized by Trudeau decades ago; stone griffins
come to life and take to the skies; and an English teacher or an oil rig
worker just might be a vampire. The book’s protagonist, Lai Fun, is
having an affair with the husband of her best friend, Stefanja.
Compelled by guilt and insatiable nostalgia, Lai Fun agrees to help
Stefanja organize her high school’s 20-year reunion.
As it moves toward a gory climax complete with zombies and a gleeful,
cannibalistic dinner party, Venous Hum reinforces its standing as a
brash, sexy, and intelligent horror novel that never makes the mistake
of taking itself too seriously. Recommended, but not for the faint of
heart!
