Review

The author, who has written a number of travel books, suffered a stroke
that left her with impaired mobility and a reduced ability to function
in day-to-day activities. A Stroke of Luck— Hardly! is the story of
how she worked to recover some of that functional ability, to the point
where she could return home and resume a different but still-active
life.

Kilgour’s positive attitude was a crucial factor in getting her
through the months of hard physical rehabilitation. “If you are going
to get through all the changes in your life,” she writes, “you’d
better learn to laugh at everything.” Although there is acknowledgment
of depression and nearly insurmountable difficulties, there is no anger
or bitterness in this inspirational little book—just a determination
to accept what has happened and get on with the business of life. A
Stroke of Luck—Hardly! should bolster the spirits of anyone dealing
with the after-effects of a stroke.
