Review

The real-life stories in this enjoyable volume recount a wide variety of
adventures involving dogs trained for law enforcement or search and
rescue (SAR) work in the Canadian Rockies. “There comes a time,” the
author states, “when a handler and dog must prove their worth to
everyone they work with.” Rescue Dogs tells the stories of some of the
handler-and-dog teams who did just that. There are chapters detailing
rescues of lost people, recovery of avalanche and drowning victims, and
manhunts for fugitives; wonderfully evocative profiles of individual
rescue dogs, including the author’s dog, Sam; an epilogue titled
“The History of Working Dogs”; a map of the areas mentioned; and a
few pictures of the dogs and people involved in the stories. Readers
interested in stories about working dogs, outdoor adventure, and true
crime will enjoy this very readable book.
