Review

The first edition of well-known Canadian wine writer Tony Aspler’s
Vintage Canada, published 12 years ago, described the 34 wineries then
in existence and spoke hopefully of a young industry with potential and
“nowhere to go but up.” This revised and updated edition contains
profiles of more than 100 wineries in the five wine-making
provinces—Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and
Newfoundland—with tasting notes on more than 450 of their products.
Not only have Canadian wineries increased in number, but the quality of
their offerings, especially their ice wines, has brought international
recognition. Subtitled “the complete reference to Canadian wines,”
this substantial volume is a guide for exploration, enjoyment, and above
all appreciation of our own distinctive wine industry.

The winery profiles are arranged alphabetically within their provinces.
Each includes an address, phone and fax numbers, an illustration of the
label, a history of the winery, its philosophy of wine-making, annual
production volume, stores where its various products are sold, and
information about winery tours and tastings. The tasting notes are also
grouped by province, arranged alphabetically by winery. They identify
and describe the particular vintage sampled and include star ratings
based on Tony Aspler’s personal assessment of its quality. The 50 ice
wines are treated separately. While there is no index to this guide, its
predominantly alphabetic arrangement and detailed table of contents make
it relatively easy to find information on a specific winery and its
products.
