This is not your average Vancouver guidebook. It looks like a guidebook.
Under the headings “Food,” “Drink,” “Hair,” “Skin,”
“Dogs,” “Death,” and “Miscellaneous” are listed real
Vancouver establishments—most of them still in existence—that do, in
fact, offer food, drink, haircuts, X-rated entertainment, and so on.
Addresses, telephone numbers, and typical prices are provided. But these
reviews purport to capture the essence of the business by observing its
clientele and workers, depicting them as Guy saw them, from the seamy
side. His sketches and anecdotes are deftly drawn and far from
flattering. This is Vancouver as you may not want to see it: sad,
sordid, but funny if your sensibilities can take it.
