Review

Cooking tips, a primer on herbs, and a few health notes, together with a
well-rounded collection of practical recipes, make up this basic work.

The most obvious feature is the large, bold print on pale yellow
paper—the recommended combination for readers with low vision.
Although the layout and design is bare-bones flat and boring, the
content boasts variety and interest.

With over 180 recipes, there is room for family classics (butter tarts,
apple pie, barley-beef soup, mac and cheese) and a few special-occasion
dishes. The scope of the book includes recipes for breads, muffins,
brunch dishes, appetizers, drinks, salads and dressings, seafood,
poultry, wild fowl, beef, pork, lamb, desserts, sauces, pickles, and
jellies.

Recipe instructions are easy to follow, if somewhat on the skimpy side.
Measurements appear in both imperial and metric units. With the
exception of game birds and a few mysterious items (berry sugar?), most
ingredients are readily available in any large supermarket. There’s a
table of contents for each section but no overall index to the recipes
or key ingredients.

For the visually impaired, it could make cooking a whole lot easier.
