Review

Building on the success of his previous guide, Day Trips from Vancouver
(1989), now in its 5th printing, Jack Christie delivers another 33
adventures for the Vancouver-based daytripper and family. These are all
new excursions, to destinations generally closer to home than those in
the earlier publication. The format is the same: how to get there (with
maps of the general areas); points of interest and landmarks to watch
for along the way; a running commentary of personal experiences and
historical snippets; and suggestions for outdoor activities at the
destination. Black-and-white photographs illustrate highlights and
views.

The trips explore five areas around Vancouver: Howe Sound up to
Britannian Beach, the North Shore from Cypress Provincial Park to the
eastern end of Baden-Powell Trail, the Fraser Valley as far east as
Sasquatch Provincial Park, the wetlands of the Fraser River Estuary, and
the islands dotting the Strait of Georgia between Vancouver and southern
Vancouver Island. The recreational opportunities are highlighted at the
beginning of each itinerary, and include such activities as boating,
cycling, swimming, walking, picnicking, and viewpoints. There is a good
index to the place names encountered on the trips, but unfortunately no
“activity index.” Both tourists and Vancouver residents will enjoy
using this guide to explore some of the most spectacular and accessible
scenery in the Pacific Northwest.
