Review

This well-organized, pocket-sized guide covers 50 walks or hikes. Many
of them are shorter than a mile, none exceeds seven miles (round trip),
and all lead to what the author refers to as “classic moments,” such
as an amazing view down a valley, a ferny dell, or a waterfall. Almost
all of the hikes/walks are maintained by the Parks Service, and have a
trailhead map and some facilities. Each hike/walk is accompanied by
color maps and a handy “Fast Facts” sidebar that provides
information on length, elevation change, where to find the map,
destination, amenities, and trailhead. Excellent photography complements
the breezy text.

Patrick Soran has published several other hiking books, including the
more extensive Rocky Mountain National Park: An Altitude Super-America
Guide (1998). His latest book is recommended for hikers and public
libraries with outdoor travel collections.
