Review

Motivating Today’s Employees is an excellent resource for managers, HR
professionals, and business owners. The author, a business journalist
and HR specialist, has divided the book into three sections. Part 1
provides an in-depth examination of motivational theory. Part 2 explores
motivation in terms of hiring, coaching, and organizational
communication. Part 3 presents examples of Canadian and U.S. programs,
policies, and practices that have been implemented with success.

Grensing-Pophal’s book is full of statistics, such as the finding
from the Work Canada Survey that “only 34 percent of employees said
their organization did a good job of seeking their opinions.” One
innovative solution to this problem comes from Continental Airlines,
which uses a simple 10-question leadership communications survey to
monitor the effectiveness of manager’s communications; managers are
held accountable for the results, which form part of their annual
evaluations.

Motivating Today’s Employees is at its best when it cites current
research and describes how to use that information to implement a
program that you design yourself. The sample “What do Employees Really
Want” survey, for example, could be easily adapted for use in any
workplace. Small and large organizations alike will benefit from the
concrete success strategies featured in this user-friendly book.
