Review

This latest work by Eugene Strickland is a comedy that looks at the
midlife crises of some middle-aged Calgary oilmen—their angst and
romantic problems. Using wit and humor, Strickland cleverly lays bare
the changing panorama that every long-term relationship will, of
necessity, pass through. At the heart of his play is the phenomenon of
“the easy and the immediate.”

In the introduction to the play, Strickland gives an insightful
analysis of how the play was developed—it went through 13
drafts—before reaching its current fine form.

Strickland is the Alberta Theatre Projects playwright-in-residence. His
play Some Assembly Required was nominated for a Governor General’s
Award in 1995.
