Review

Looking for the homepage of the Toronto Maple Leafs? Want to browse the
Web sites of all the Canadian universities? This 800-page directory is
devoted to the Canadian presence on the Internet, with more than 2000
entries ranging from the academic to corporate and individual items.
Each entry is presented in large, easy-to-read type, followed by a brief
description. For added convenience, a diskette (available for Windows
and Mac) containing all of the resources found in the book is included
in a format supported by any Web browser.

It is no simple task to categorize the vast array of material available
on the Internet. The Canadian Internet Directory is presented as a
Yellow Pages of sorts, but the listings are difficult to find because
there is no index outlining the subjects used in the book.

The second half of the book lists more than 300 Internet access
providers across Canada. General information is given, but relevant
details—such as the ratio of telephone lines to users—that affect
the quality of service would have been helpful. The guide does indicate
which companies provide additional services (e.g., Web-site design) and
their rates when available. Also included is a $20 coupon redeemable by
a majority of the service providers listed in the book.

Despite its shortcomings, this is a useful reference for anyone
interested in using the Canadian resources the Internet has to offer.
