Jean Paré is well-known known for producing full-color, easy-to-flip,
no-nonsense cookbooks. Appliance Cooking is aimed at people with busy
schedules and offers plenty of speedy solutions for all occasions. It is
one of the few cookbooks that does not require a stove as a prerequisite
for preparing the dishes; instead, one can use other kitchen appliances,
such as a blender, juicer, bread machine, electric frying pan, food
processor, pressure cooker, slow cooker, or toaster oven.
Paré includes 170 recipes in 10 chapters. Each chapter contains an
introductory section that provides a description of the appliance and
tips for using it, followed by recipes and nutritional information. The
cooking procedures and techniques are quick and easy, and the recipes
are based on readily available ingredients. For example, the
Cranberry-Glazed Pork Chops or Lamb Curry would do well even in
complicated and ambitious dinner endeavors. Homemade breads, ranging
from sweet to savory, sound great too, particularly in combination with
the rich array of soups and spreads offered here. Finally, there are
plenty of pleasers for kids—pizzas, oozing sandwiches, puddings,
shakes, and slushes. In a word, Appliance Cooking is a fine attempt to
improve the art of fast everyday cooking.
