Review

The Truth About Love brings together Patrick Roscoe’s previously
published short fiction, along with many new additions. Each of the
stories examines some aspect of loss, whether a loss of love, innocence,
curiosity, faith, or even sanity. Many stories are linked through
recurring characters. For example, a story told from a child’s
perspective details a boy’s trauma when he is separated from his
mother and later befriends what appears to be his anima; in a later
story, subtle references lead us back to the same boy, now an adult,
falling into madness.

In these very inward-looking stories, the internal lives of the
well-rounded characters are always at the fore, captivating yet
disturbing. Poetic descriptions leaven the book’s dark themes. Patrick
Roscoe is an important voice in Canadian fiction.
