Review

The 40 cycling routes described in this guide are “around” Vancouver
in the sense of being near but not within the city. They are scenic
country sightseeing tours ranging north to Squamish, east to Harrison,
and south to communities in northwestern Washington State. Distances are
moderate, from 10 to 45 kilometres. Each ride includes a map; a
description of the route, indicating elapsed distances to turns and
points of interest along the way; a black-and-white photograph; and a
short commentary on the history and notable features of the area. A
summary table at the beginning of the ride gives overall length in
kilometres, approximate hours to complete, traffic volume, highlights,
the starting point and how to get there, and a suggested picnic spot.
Indexes by destination, approximate duration in hours and kilometres,
and the best season to make the trip are a great help in planning an
outing. These trips are well within the capabilities of novice cyclists
and for their benefit the authors include advice on choosing a bicycle,
accessories, and wardrobe for touring, as well as all-important
guidelines for cycling safely. Recreational cyclists of all ages and
abilities will find much to enjoy “around” Vancouver, following this
compact and well-organized guide.
