Review

This nostalgic look at the history of Winnipeg is organized into
thematic sections, including the early years, educational institutions,
leisure-time activities, and notable Winnipeggers. The full-page
black-and-white photographs, mainly drawn from the Provincial Archives
collections, will be of particular interest to those who already have
some knowledge of the city’s history. Each section is prefaced with a
brief introduction, and the photographs are accompanied by easy-to-read
and entertaining captions.

The photographs may leave you wishing for more information (e.g., who
are the people in them?), but this is a minor quibble about a book that
will be a very popular item for libraries and for those looking for
archival photographs that show the way Canadians once lived.
