Review

The eight stories in this collection paint a vivid picture of life in
1901 Northern Ontario. It was a time of pioneers and settlers, of miners
and trappers, of superstition and magic as Old World and New World
beliefs intermingled. The stories are a testament to the endurance that
the harsh pioneer life required of those it lived it. At the same time,
an element of magical realism runs through the collection, from the
malevolent neighbor who could be a monstrous spirit to the sprites from
the Old World who may make trouble for an immigrant family. Hardy’s
lively characters respond to their various predicaments in believable
ways, adding to her authentic portrait of a young Canada.
