Review

Equity and Globalization in Education is a collection of papers that
were presented at the January 2001 International Congress for School
Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI). Seven of the contributors are
from Canada; the rest are from Australia, the United Kingdom, Chile,
Hong Kong, and Sweden. Each paper is accompanied by a comprehensive set
of references.

The ICSEI invited submissions on policies, strategies, and initiatives
needed to promote diversity and ensure equity in education. The editors
have organized the selected papers around three broad themes:
“Schooling for Global Citizenship: Trends and Debates,” “Equity
and Diversity: Issues, Concerns and Critiques,” and “Canadian
Initiatives and Debates.” Introductory sections are provided for each
of these sections and for the book as a whole. However, the overview is
not comprehensive enough to afford the general reader a perspective
broader than the one presented in the compilation itself. Nor is the
collection in its present form designed to provide a coherent body of
advice to practitioners. Accordingly, it will be of use and interest
primarily to scholars and specialists in the field.
