Review

This book is an illustrated field guide to the 125 species of mammals of
British Columbia, organized in seven major groups: hoofed mammals,
whales/dolphins/porpoises, carnivores, rodents, hares and pikas, bats,
and insectivores. The groups are color-coded on the top and side edges
of the book for quick access. For each species, there is a lucidly
written introduction that provides, together with a range map,
information on behavior, physiology and other unique identifying
characteristics, habitat, food, den, and young.

In addition to high-quality color photographs and illustrations,
Mammals of British Columbia is packed with gems of further information
such as sample footprints of many species, fascinating “Did You
Know?” sidebars, suggestions for best viewing areas in British
Columbia, and a “Similar Species” description to avoid confusion
with mammals that look alike. This beautifully produced book would make
a fine addition to the backpack or family car.
