Review

Evelyne Michaels, a specialist in health and medicine, edits Health
News, a consumer health letter published by the Faculty of Medicine at
the University of Toronto. Michael Gordon is a professor of medicine at
the University of Toronto and the head of Geriatric and Internal
Medicine at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care. Their collaboration
has produced this large-format encyclopedia on health and aging, filled
with photographic illustrations and important tips that would be useful
in any adult household as well as to seniors. Well designed, the book
has a heavy-duty, laminated paper cover, a two-column format, and
medium-large print. The tips are set off in shaded sidebars.

Topics covered include independent living, nutrition, healthier aging,
sexuality, sleep, skin care, memory loss, common complaints, loneliness,
family issues, arthritis, and cancer, as well as many other problems and
diseases. The table of contents provides detailed subheadings (with page
numbers) for each chapter. There is an extensive index. Many seniors
will find the encyclopedia useful and reassuring. Highly recommended for
home and public libraries.
