Review

This thorough field guide describes the flora found in that area of
British Columbia north of about 53°N and excluding the coastal region.
Unfortunately, the map promised in the text was missing from the inside
front cover.

The field guide begins with a brief introduction describing how to use
the guide, some key geographic features of the area, and notes on
regional ethnobotany (touching on technological, medicinal, and
nutritional uses of local plants).

Detailed botanical listings are grouped in the following broad
categories: Trees, Shrubs and Small Trees, Wildflowers, Grasses, Sedges
and Rushes, Ferns and Allies, Bryophytes, and Lichens. Identification
keys are provided to help the field user differentiate between species,
and then each species is described in depth.

Each plan listing generally includes a photo, an illustration, and
details of plant appearance and ecology. A notes section for each plant
includes ethnobotanical information, details about when the plant was
first discovered (and by whom), and how it was named.

A glossary, references, and a comprehensive index to both common and
scientific names are also provided. The guide is well-organized and
precisely written. Illustrations are clearly reproduced and helpful for
making accurate species identifications in the field.
