Review

These two companion garden guides focus on perennial and annual flowers
suitable for British Columbia gardens. With many lists of suggested
plants suitable for different growing conditions, a pictorial index
(with a small photograph of each species for which there is a detailed
listing), as well as a quick reference chart summarizing color, blooming
times, height, hardiness, light preferences, and soil conditions for
each species, it is easy to identify plants likely to do well in your
garden.

Both books begin with a section devoted to general gardening advice.
The authors describe the various growing zones in British Columbia,
composting techniques, and pest and disease control. The emphasis is on
organic methods and growing healthy, vigorous plants well suited to
their terrain.

Detailed plant listings make up the main body of each volume. These
individual plant listings include photographs of the species in bloom
(usually showing several varieties, though not every variety illustrated
is identified by name). As well as basic statistics like flower color,
height, and spread, the species listings include instructions for
planting, growing, propagation, problems and pests, and recommended
varieties.

Perennials for British Columbia provides detailed guidelines for plant
selection; how to plant bare-root perennials and rhizomes; using
planters; pruning, deadheading, and other maintenance chores; and
propagation techniques specific to perennials. Annuals for British
Columbia discusses selection of healthy bedding plants, starting your
own seeds, preparing planting beds, and caring for annual plants.

Clearly written, attractively designed, and well organized, these
guides are easy to use and full of useful information. There are plants
here for complete beginners and those that will challenge even the
greenest of thumbs.
