Review

This “teachers’ guide to mammals” contains 27 lesson plans that
support the objectives and outcomes of an elementary science curriculum.
“Hands-on” activities involve language arts, science, math, and the
arts. Learning natural history is the focus, with students involved in
lessons that develop their abilities to observe and communicate and to
manipulate materials and equipment. Experiments, such as a camouflage
study using colored toothpicks in a natural environment, or the use of
thermometers, paper towels, and a fan to investigate the cooling effect
of evaporation, are simple and effective ways to demonstrate important
concepts. The lessons, which make use of crafts, games, and puzzles, are
clear and easy to follow. Accompanying illustrations also provide
helpful information. Suggestions are given for extension activities and
vocabulary enrichment. Reproducible fact sheets outlining background
information on 12 specific mammals, including their habitats, particular
characteristics, and survival techniques, are included.
