Review

Boudreau, a scholar and an educator, traces the earlier history of
Catholic education in Quebec schools, following through with an
even-handed analysis of the ongoing “Christian versus secularist”
debate. His paradigm on regulations governing Quebec schools is
excellent, as is his final chapter on “maintaining the essence,”
with its emphasis on the need for formation of a Christian community in
schools and what such an formation would entail. The role of parents in
the process is given appropriate prominence.

Boudreau presents a strong case for continuing Catholic and moral
instruction in Quebec schools. His book, which includes introductory
quotations, supporting references, a bibliography, and a useful index,
is offered to anglophone readers.
