Review

H.E. Emson, emeritus professor of pathology, also holds a diploma in
Medical Law and Ethics. In providing the reader with an excellent
description of both the differences and the similarities between
medicine and law, Dr. Emson puts into perspective the competing and
common interests that the two professions bring to many of the issues
discussed in this practical guide. Also described are the structure of
the legal system, the process of going to court and giving evidence, and
ethical dilemmas resulting from rising medical costs and cuts in
health-care funding. Practical examples are used to illustrate such
issues as consent, coroners’ duties, malpractice, negligence, and
physicians’ relationships with their professional bodies and
hospitals.

Physicians and other health-care professionals who are bewildered by
the legal system and medico-legal issues will find clarification in this
well-written and well-organized volume.
