Emergent Voices: CBC Canadian Literary Awards Stories 1979-1999

R. Gordon Moyles is professor emeritus of English at the University of
Alberta, the co-author of Imperial Dreams and Colonial Realities:
British Views of Canada, 1880–1914, and the author of The Salvation
Army and the Public.

In 1979, the CBC inaugurated its Canadian Literary Awards, broadcasting
the winning essays, poems, and short stories. The 20 stories in Emergent
Voices testify to the endeavor’s unqualified success. Among the
contributors responsible for the collection’s impressive creative
energy are Audrey Thomas, Kent Thompson, Michael Ondaatje, Carol
Shields, Janette Turner Hospital, Gwendolyn MacEwen, Janice Kulyk
Keefer, W.D. Valgardson, Gail Anderson-Dargatz, Katherine Govier,
Frances Itani, and Bill Gaston.

Editor Robert Weaver, cofounder of the Tamarack Review and founder of
the Canadian Literary Awards, has edited many anthologies, including
Mavis Gallant’s The End of the World and Other Stories and The Oxford
Book of Canadian Short Stories. The only thing this fine collection
lacks is a critical introduction. Emergent Voices is recommended for
general readers and students of Canadian literature.
