Review

These 12 wryly humorous linked stories revolve around Marion, a writer
who lives at home with her husband, mother-in-law, and three
almost-adult children. The family lives near Victoria, on Vancouver
Island, in the small town of Sidney. The stories are bright, funny, and
undeniably real as this harried mother juggles her writing career with
grocery and condom runs for the kids.

Farrant writes from the perspective of a woman who has been surprised
by adulthood. Both parents have woken up from their own early 20s of
wild living to discover that their children have no intention of growing
up and leaving home. In one particularly memorable
story—“Skidney”—Farrant takes an amusing but heartfelt look at
parents’ natural exasperation with teens who need to party day in and
day out, and to drink themselves silly. This collection will entertain
any reader.
