Review

Senior hockey in Newfoundland is inextricably linked with the Herder
Memorial Trophy; communities in the province have been vying for this
symbol of hockey supremacy since 1935. This book, the first in a series,
traces the history of the Herder Trophy. Starting in 1950, interest in
the trophy started to wane as a result of changes in senior hockey in
Newfoundland. To remain competitive, teams imported players from
Northern Ontario (as budgets climbed, some teams went under) and focused
their energies on winning Canadian titles like the Allan Cup. By 1990,
however, enthusiasm for local Herder Trophy had been rekindled.
Appendixes documenting Herder Trophy champions—complete with team
rosters, top scorers, rookies of the year, most gentlemanly players, and
most valuable players—round out this well-organized volume.
