Review

For Canadian coin collectors, there can be no substitute for the
Charlton guides—works that have clearly proven their value.

Canadian Coins covers coins from as far back as the 1600s to 2001. It
includes both commercial and commemorative coins, coins from the French
and British regimes, and pre-decimal coins. An illustration, date, mint
mark, quantity minted, and value according to condition are given for
each of hundreds of coins. An exceptionally valuable essay on the
adjectival and numerical grading of coins is included as part of the
“how-to” material for new collectors.

In contrast, the smaller 2001 Charlton Coin Guide concentrates on older
coins (unlikely to still be in circulation), with coverage extending to
colonial coins and tokens, collectors issues and sets, paper money,
Newfoundland and Maritime coinage, Canadian medals, and a few
exceptional coins from the United States and other countries. The guide
also includes dealers’ buying prices. An illustration, date, mint
mark, and description are given for the listings. For buyers interested
in the precious meals from which coins are made, there’s a useful
appendix on bullion values for gold, silver, and platinum.
