Review

This third volume of Danda Humphreys’s highly popular series on the
stories behind Victoria’s street names adds 42 new tales to the 80
already published in volumes 1 and 2. Sea captains and merchants,
politicians and professional men populate the pages with their families
and colleagues. Their stories are the story of Victoria’s early days
as a developing city and cultural centre in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. Fine reproductions of historical photographs of the
characters and their times illustrate nearly every page. Humphreys is an
enthusiastic and capable researcher, whose talent for engaging
storytelling has brought Victoria’s history to life for thousands of
readers through her newspaper columns and books.
