Review

In this slender book, O.E. Simon presents a system of exercises and
techniques for breathing that he calls Kungrobics. This volume explains
the first set of exercises and will be followed by other volumes
covering the remaining five sets of exercises.

The book begins with a brief discussion of balanced exercise,
breathing, and health that may be useful to the reader with a
theoretical interest. The soft, long, reaching movements in these
exercises combine naturally with breathing in the tradition of the
ancient activity of kung fu. Simon describes breathing as a key to our
energy for living. He notes that it is only partially under our control
and thus provides the bridge between conscious and less conscious
activities and between the mind and the body. He also explains that
strong sudden movements are needed to awaken the body and provide a
sense of purpose.

Over a third of the book is devoted to calligraphy, hand drawings,
paintings, and poetry that convey the spirit of each of the exercises.
Simon suggests that the greatest benefit and enjoyment will be gained
when the poems are used to involve the mind as well as the body in each
exercise. For those who may have difficulty doing the exercises without
the aid of a teacher, a supplementary video is available.
