Review

The fundamentals of golf may be elementary, but it is still an
intimidating experience to be on the links for the first time with no
knowledge of the terminology of the rules of etiquette. This book covers
these basics—where to stand (not in the way), when to play, when to
remain still, and what not to say after a triple bogey. While these
things are taken for granted by anyone with any golfing experience, for
aspiring employees who are invited to their first company tournament and
are worried about committing a career-dampening faux pas, this little
manual will be a godsend.

Unfortunately, most people may not want to be seen reading this book,
as it is written in a puerile style and the contents are eked out with
inanities. The cartoon illustrations are amusing, but the essential
material could have been covered more concisely. Some finer details and
more information as to the rules about penalty shots, shots from
hazards, etc., would have been welcome. Instead, Jukes simply refers
readers, without explanation, to golf’s rules of play.

The book does not offer instruction in swinging a club, a problem
addressed by countless other books. Nonetheless, it will help the duffer
who shanks his ball into an unplayable lie to do so with some grace.
