Review

As a wine reference, this guide is, in the words of the author,
“refreshing.” Munnelly focuses on wines available at LCBO stores in
Ontario, but the brands discussed are also available in other provinces.
He offers price-performance advice (i.e., identifying low-cost, quality,
or different selections), and organizes the book into the following
sections: his philosophy, the wine survivor six-pack system (which
includes a description, food suggestions and examples of wines under
each category), and a “fringe” section. The guide also includes a
tear away “shopping list” of the 100 wines listed, 15 short sections
on “wine stuff,” his newsletter order information, and a picture of
the man himself.

This small, spiral-bound handbook packs a lot of punch. The tone is
light and unpretentious, and the wines mentioned are affordable (ranging
in price from $8 to $13). The CSPC codes provided will be helpful when
you go shopping. Billy’s Best Bottles Top 100 Wine Picks for 2002 is
recommended for all wine drinkers.
