Review

The Canadian Living Test Kitchen is the largest of its kind in the
country, and the qualified staff test and produce more than 500 recipes
each year. A recipe is certified “perfect” only after it reaches the
staff’s high standards of taste, presentation, ease of preparation,
and healthfulness. This book, by Canadian Living’s food and nutrition
editor Elizabeth Baird, features more than 350 of the magazine’s
published recipes, including Dutch Meatball Soup, Thai Green Curry
Chicken, Potato Gnocchi, and the classic Upside-Down Cake with a rhubarb
twist. It is unfortunate that not every recipe is pictured; there are
only 16 color pages of delicious-looking dishes.

The book covers the essentials (appetizers, main courses, desserts),
includes a section on preserves (jellies, jams, chutneys, relishes, and
salsas), and highlights regional specialties from heritage communities.
It also includes a glossary of cooking and baking terms, a section on
using bread machines and slow cookers, complete nutritional analysis for
each dish, and an extensive index to recipes and key ingredients.
Easy-to-decipher symbols at the top of each page indicate whether the
recipe is fast, freezable, economical, or a Canadian Living classic.
Helpful tips abound. Both beginning and experienced cooks will enjoy
this book.
