Review

This is a catalogue of the British ceramics in the Winnipeg Art Galley
collection, a collection that is rich in decorative shapes, applied
decoration, color, and styles. Creamware, pearlware, stoneware, and
ironware are included in the collection.

The catalogue’s full-color plates convey the cultural influences and
evolution of decoration, from the oriental motifs of the 1800s to the
art nouveau influences of the 1920s.

All the big-name pottery houses are represented: Wedgewood,
Staffordshire, Spoke, Belleek (although not the better-known delicate
porcelain), DeMorgan, Doulton, Davenport, Minton, and many others. The
work consists of more than 150 professional-quality full-color
photographs, a brief, informal introduction, and identification details
(size, maker, date) for each piece. A great reference for pottery
collectors and students of the history of design, the catalogue offers
informative browsing for anyone interested in ceramics.
