Review

In 1984–85, wilderness adventurer Chris Czajkowski began writing to
the CBC program Morningside about her present-day pioneering experiences
in central British Columbia. The letters were read for broadcast on the
program by Lorna Jackson and distributed in printed form in 1991. This
reissue of those letters includes an introduction by the late Peter
Gzowski, former host of Morningside, explaining how he came to know the
author and her wilderness home through her correspondence.

Hardship and rough country were not new to Chris Czajkowski. She had
explored remote lands on her own all over the world. But the Singing
River experience was exceptional even for her. Over a couple of years,
she cleared forest and built with her own hands a home from the trees
she felled 27 miles from the nearest road. While carrying out her
project, she came to know and love the wild beauty of the Tweedsmuir
Park area. Through her wonderful gift for words, she is able to help us
appreciate it too.
