Review
Alberta author Jim Scott is an avid hiker, skier, and mountaineer. When
not teaching at Red Deer College, he is exploring the beautiful mountain
terrains of Western Canada and beyond. In Backcountry Huts and Lodges,
Scott shares a wealth of experience and practical suggestions for anyone
interested in spending the night in a wilderness lodge in Canada’s
Rockies and Columbia Mountains. The handbook describes 124 huts and
lodges, ranging from a night in a primitive hut with no amenities (the
cost is free to several dollars) to a night in a luxurious lodge
(featuring world-class chefs and fine wines) that costs several hundred
dollars. There are accommodations to suit all tastes and budgets, all
routes and travel plans.
Complete with clear black-and-white photographs of each accommodation,
the guide is divided into geographic sectors. Detailed maps in each
sector show the geographic relation of each accommodation. Each
description includes the location, GPS coordinates, amenities, features,
access points for various seasons and methods of travel, estimated
travel times, titles of well-known guidebooks that have recommended the
accommodation, and excellent information on making reservations. Also
included is the summer 2001 cost of each accommodation, e-mail address
and Web site (when available), contact information for British
Columbia’s provincial parks and related national parks, and a brief
section on newly defunct huts. This handy, no-nonsense guide would make
an fine addition to any outdoor enthusiast’s bookshelf.
