Review

Here is a guide for visitors to and residents of the Ottawa, Ottawa
Valley, Gatineau, Kingston area of Ontario, and adjacent Quebec.
Sixty-two single-day excursions are described. There are hikes, walking
tours, bicycle tours, and automobile trips, offering the reader an
enormous variety of sights, activities, adventures, and enjoyment in the
general vicinity of Canada’s capital city.

Within the City of Ottawa, Parliament Hill, three universities, the
homes of famous people past and present, the government experimental
farm, walking trails, and the Rideau Canal are just a few of the trips
described, always with interesting and useful background and historical
information included. Moving slightly beyond the city, daytrips, nature
parks, hiking trails, and historical sites abound. Annual events such as
maple syrup activities, music festivals, and country fairs are
identified with approximate dates and information sources. The final
chapter, “Discovering More Outdoors,” covers bird watching, picnic
sites, children’s activities, horseback riding, white-water rafting,
skiing, and even dog sledding.

The guide is well written and entertaining, and will be welcomed by
would-be adventurers, parents seeking to occupy children and teens,
tourists visiting the area, and hosts wishing to entertain visitors.
