Review

In this lively book, Tom Harpur discusses the phenomenon of “spiritual
healing” from a host of positions ranging from scientific scepticism
to biblical exegeses. He comes to the startling conclusion that it
actually works. Although beautifully written and moving, the book
presents a somewhat naive worldview. Despite this, Harpur’s
methodology is responsible and rational. He makes no radical claims,
save for his unorthodox Christology, and is frequently persuasive in his
arguments. Because of these qualities, I would recommend The Uncommon
Touch not only for the clergy but also for those in medicine who are
willing to entertain the subject with an open mind.
