Review

A charming and informative book for those interested in brewing their
own cosmetics, Skin Deep “offers a plethora of recipes and suggestions
for natural, home-made aids to health and beauty.” The author
discusses ingredients, methods, and equipment, as well as recipe
applications for the bath; for the body, face, and hair; and for
children.

Sources for ingredients are indicated (e.g., kitchen, garden,
pharmacy), and each ingredient is described in terms of its qualities,
uses, and appropriate precautions to be taken. However, to make the best
use of ingredients from the garden one would need a plant guide
(descriptions of the plant sources are not given, although the author
stresses the need for correct identification). Those who are interested
in research on the efficacy of these plants, herbs, essential oils, and
so forth, will not find references here, although a list of further
reading as well as a list of possible sources for the more obscure
ingredients are provided.

Descriptions of methods and equipment are clear, concise, detailed, and
easy to understand. Directions and recipes for specific bath additives,
body and face lotions, astringents, and special recipes for children are
quite inviting. Most appear simple and pleasant.

Skin Deep will appeal to anyone who wants to concoct skin or hair
products from natural ingredients. Its entertaining and informative
style make it a pleasure to read.
