Review

This reprint of a book first published in 1967 consists of 12 narratives
that take the reader in a literal circuit around Montreal’s Mount
Royal. Besides a geographic circle, the book also records a one-year
climatic cycle in the life of the city. Not content with longitude and
latitude, Hood also elevates the reader up the mountain until, mid-book,
the summit is reached for a short, ecstatic vision. Then the reader is
physically and spiritually lowered back down the other side. There are
echoes of Wordsworth, Milton, and Coleridge in these intelligent yet
plain-spoken vignettes of everyday life in Montreal. While most other
Expo ’67 artifacts are gathering dust, Around the Mountain holds its
own today.
