Review

The 20 stories in this collection range from the “merely good” to
the “eerily unforgettable.” The ones that are unforgettable merit
the cover blurb comparisons to Stephen King. In these stories, the
emphasis is not on gore and blood, but rather on the skilful use of
suspense and the tweaking of our assumptions to create the illusion that
we’ve experienced something horrific. The collection, which opens with
an introduction by Canadian science-fiction writer Robert J. Sawyer,
includes no commentaries from the author except for a rather poignant
personal reflection following “And Injustice for Some.” Despite the
off-putting title, this book should find many fans.
