Review
This unusual approach to great meals is both very attractive and
practical. The concept is to provide the recipes for choice dishes from
66 of the best inns and restaurants in the maritime provinces of New
Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, accompanied by
information on the establishments that produced these masterpieces.
The work is rich, with more than 170 lush color photos of fresh
produce, mouth-watering dishes, maritime scenery, and the inns and
restaurants (interiors and exteriors). Even the noncook who enjoys a
good meal in attractive surroundings will find it pleasant browsing.
The book includes recipes for appetizers, soups, salads, seafood, other
entrées, vegetables, desserts, and breads. Although most of the dishes
are quite simple to prepare, all are a bit special, thanks either to an
unusual combination of flavors; an inspired use of local, fresh
ingredients; or a skilled use of fresh herbs. As is the case in most
maritime cooking, the metric system, rare exotic ingredients, and overly
complicated processes are all ignored. The ingredients lists tend to be
short and the methods concise yet clear.
The inns and restaurants were selected for the quality of their food,
but most are also notable for their interesting architecture and/or
special setting. A few paragraphs on each covers history, architectural
style, size, unique features or services, type of cuisine, address, and
phone number.
An exceptional book, certain to be a favorite that will move with ease
between coffee table and kitchen.
