Review

This handsome volume, embellished with more than 100 photographs of
buildings in Nova Scotia, aims to fill the void created by the lack of a
comprehensive work on the historical architecture of the province. This
is not a catalogue of historical buildings in Nova Scotia. Rather, the
book addresses building types and styles through a series of essays that
make reference to representative buildings. The works included range
from humble fish sheds to grand residences and public structures.
Readers with greater curiousity regarding historical construction
techniques may be disappointed, as these are not plumbed to depth. The
book does, however, give a good account of the art business, and of the
politics of building in earlier times, and its descriptions of the
personalities associated with the buildings will be of interest to the
lay reader.
