Review

Ontario’s Giant’s Rib is the ridge of rocky land between the Niagara
River and Manitoulin Island. It is dramatic land, with irregular hills,
spectacular jutting rocks, sand dunes, caves, cliffs, gullies, and
waterfalls. It is home to wonderful scenery and a wide variety of birds,
animals, trees, and plants, some of them unique to this area alone.

This book consists of 10 detailed driving/walking tours that combined,
cover the 450-mile Ontario section of the Giant’s Rib. For each tour
there’s a map, driving directions, description of notable natural and
historic sites, excellent background material on the terrain, flora and
fauna, and numerous full-color quality photos. Conservation and
protection of the fragile environment is stressed throughout.

The area is a paradise for naturalists, hikers, and photographers. The
variety and attention-grabbing nature of much of the scenery has made
Giant’s Rib popular with tourists and exposed it to all the
wear-and-tear that such status implies. By bringing to the public’s
attention the fragile nature of this special environment, this work
should go a long way toward turning tourists into appreciative,
protective supporters.
