Review

The characters who populate this collection of interrelated stories
yearn for adventure and release. Like the young husband hovering on the
brink of infidelity in “A Sporting Life,” they often draw back from
danger and opt for lives of quiet desperation. In “The Park Street
Bridge” and “Femmes Fatales,” two rebellious teenaged girls allow
themselves to be picked up by “older men.” “Where Adders Lie”
takes us from an insurance man’s fascination with things gone wrong to
his brush with death. “Family History” chronicles the feelings of
anticipation and disappointment that accompany an interest in family
genealogy. A sense of isolation pervades these crisply written and
evocative tales.
