Review

Designed with Vancouver’s visitors in mind, this exceptionally
beautiful souvenir album and guide contains more than 160 full-color
photographs that capture the essence of this vibrant coastal city and
the richness of its culture. Internationally acclaimed photographer
Philip Hersee understands his subject’s character and moods very well,
being a Vancouver resident himself. This is a sequel to his first album,
Greater Vancouver—Touch the Magic (1985). Chris McBeath’s
descriptive and historical commentary binds clusters of photographs
together into mini tours of Vancouver’s best-known attractions. For
the visitor in a hurry, the “top 30” destinations Quick Pick guide,
with accompanying map, serves as table of contents and selective tour
planner for the album as a whole. The focus on tourism is clear,
especially in the concluding “Travelling Information and Services”
section, but the photographic artistry of this collection will appeal at
least as much to those who live in Vancouver permanently and love the
city they call home.
