Review

Concentrating on the communities along Newfoundland’s south coast,
this book looks at the shipbuilders who constructed the local schooners,
as well as at the merchants and captains who owned the vessels. The
author has made excellent use of both written and oral sources,
including accounts by survivors of marine disasters. Among the book’s
several appendices is a list of shipping disasters associated with
various communities. This general account of Newfoundland’s
“forgotten coast” will be of particular interest to students of
Canadian maritime history.
