Review

Written by a practising medical herbalist, this book looks at 60 readily
available plants and foods that have always been central to people’s
lives. They include oats, lemons, milk, cinnamon, potato, cucumber,
witch hazel, and eucalyptus. For each remedy, the author sketches a
thumbnail review that includes common uses, a summary of the remedy’s
nutritional value, indications for internal and external applications,
and a tidy sidebar offering pertinent historical information. She also
provides instructions for preparing both internal and external
applications, including poultices, tinctures, eyewash, and compresses.
Folk Remedies for Common Ailments is a good introduction to the use of
remedies.
