Review

This second volume in a planned series of six handbooks devoted to the
mammals of British Columbia is comprehensive, accurate, and, above all,
clear and accessible. Designed to be taken into the field, the book can
be used by naturalists to identify both captured animals and the source
of animal signs. A brief chapter devoted to the general biology of
opossums and a longer treatment of insectivores are followed by
illustrated accounts of 13 species. The general text contains
discussions of such topics as conservation, methods of study, and
taxonomy. Included in the appendices are data on animal measurements and
weights, along with a list of animal and plant names. A glossary, a list
of references, and a fold-out map of B.C.’s biogeoclimatic zones round
out this fine volume.
